2. Constitutive Norms of Objectivity

In addition to norms of preemption and norms of remediation, there are also what I will call constitutive norms of objectivity. Here are some plausible examples:

• “Don’t let your financial interests influence your judgment about what you’re morally required to do.”

• “Judge people by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin.”

• “Don’t favor a graduate student over others just because they agree with the central claims of your research program and are committed to advancing that program.”

• “In making hiring decisions, don’t give an advantage to people because they belong to your ethnic group.”

• “Arrive at your decisions in unbiased ways.”

• “Don’t be biased.”
